How to Upload Models

A couple of documents are available for downloading and printing on how to upload a model. They are:

  • 3D ModelWORKS Converter
  • 3D ModelWORKS Upload Tutorial

If you are a registered modeler, there is a link on your home page for adding new models to the web server. Before adding a model, some background work must be done, so that all of the fields can be entered efficiently.

  • Gather all of the files associated with the model you wish to sell into a single directory. This would include mesh and texture files. Create a zip file containing all these files that would constitute a complete sales package.

  • Create at least one thumbnail image of your model. This thumbnail should be in either GIF or JPG format, and be 200w x 185h pixels in size. Optionally create a second thumbnail that shows left, front, and top views. This should also be 200w x 185h pixels in size.

  • In order to create a file for viewing over the Internet, open the 3D ModelWORKS Converter (provided as part of your modeler account setup). Select IMPORT for your file type. When import is complete, select SAVE FOR 3DModelWorks to create a web-viewable version of your model. You may skip this step if you do not wish a to provide your model in interactive 3D.

  • Record the number of polygons in your model, the number of textures, the dimensions of those textures, and the file size. If you are using the conversion program, the polygon and texture counts are displayed at the bottom of the listbox.

  • Go to the Add a Model page. The first page defines attributes and keywords for your model. Enter the appropriate name and associated information for this new model. Note that the NAME, SHORT DESCRIPTION, and DESCRIPTION fields are required.

  • Next select appropriate keywords for the model. You may either selected existing keywords or new ones to associate with your model.

  • Click the BROWSE button next to the Image Path field and select the created thumbnail image.

  • If you created the 3 view thumbnail image, click the BROWSE button next to the 3Way Image field and select the created thumbnail image.

  • If you created a model file, click the BROWSE button next to the 3xe Path field and select the created 3XE model file.

  • Click the ADD button at the bottom of the page.

  • Once the ADD operation is complete, you have created a model description on the web site. However, there are no defined formats for sale yet, you have only described your model. To actually sell something, you have to add one or more formats to associate with this new model. To do so, click on the Edit Model Formats link for this model.

  • Select the type of the model format, the price for it, and the file size.

  • Click the BROWSE button next to the File Path field and select the created zip file.

  • Click the ADD / EDIT FORMATS button at the bottom of the page.

Congratulations! You have defined a new model on the web site. This model will be posted into the most recent models list, and inserted into the selected category. You will be kept informed off all activity related to this model; in particular, you will be e-mailed whenever a sale is complete.

To add, change, or remove a model format or to set the model's price, follow the Edit Model Formats link. If you only wish to edit the properties of your model (polygon count, image files, description, etc.), make all your desired changes in the form provided then click on the Change Properties button at the bottom of the form to save.

Note that you cannot change the NAME field for a model. Also, to change upload files associated with the model (thumbnail, 3way, and 3XE files), you must delete the file first, and then upload the new version. There is a large icon next to each model file listed at your home page. If you must to change the NAME field, you must delete the entire model from the system and recreate it with the updated information.

You may add or remove model formats and keywords at any time. Likewise, properties for a model may be changed by the model author. If you have any difficulties, contact us at support@3dmodelworks.com.

How to Upload Libraries

allows you to upload libraries of models or textures for sale on the site. Adding and editing libraries is very similar to the process of adding and editing models. Refer back to the documentation for adding or editing a model.

There are a few differences is the processes. Rather than entering the number of polygons (for a model), you enter the number of entries within your library. Additionally, the fields that pertain directly to models (textures, LOD, etc.) have been removed as they do not make sense in the library context. You may still attach a 3XE to your library, which may contain a sample entry within your library or you may leave this file field empty.

This section details the process of uploading libraries. If you have any difficulties, contact us at support@3dmodelworks.com.
